We’ve made it to Alaska

We’ve made it to Alaska! So, it’s not all blue skies and big mountains, it’s more like grey skies and big mountains. Not to say that it’s a bad thing there’s obscuration in the sky, I’d like to think it’s more authentic…. Ha! We’ve currently made it as far as Skagway and tomorrow will float around Glacier Bay to look at large chunks of stale ice. We hope to see more whales and glaciers, but only time will tell. Cruising up the coast we were able to see quite a few whales and when we arrived at Juneau we rented a car and drove around town aimlessly until we found Mendenhall glacier and the Alaskan Brewing Company. If ever in Alaska, I’ve got to recommend both as good stops, not that you can go much further than either, Juneau is not really an easy place to flee from, they like to say there’s only three ways in; birth, plane, or boat. Once our quick trip to Juneau was done we promptly headed towards Skagway. Today wasn’t too busy, we rode the White Pass Summit Railroad to…… White Pass Summit. Although I think this ticket is probably more than a round trip to Dallas on the Heartland Flyer, it’s worth it. There are several waterfalls visible from the railroad as well as views I only imagine you can get in Alaska. The tour guides are good and we were able to sweet talk one of them into riding the caboose so we could get good photos off of the unobstructed back platform. (Top TIp: Know that you will be in the front of the train going down, the seats flip over and you then face the opposite direction that you did going up and they put the locomotives on the other end). Once we were back in Skagway we “Misty Mosied” around town to the bakers where we were able to procure a “Elephant Ear”, this was really a big sopapilla, but the Alaskans like to pass it off as a donut, or so Misty tells me, this will have to work for my birthday donut until better provisions can be located…..i.e. Tim Hortons in Vancouver.
