Not so sleepless in Sante Fe.

It’s official…we have left the “Heatdome!” I can officially state that since we drove around last night with the top down. It was a cool 66 degrees from about 7:00 pm on, crazy thought to all of us Okie’s who are burning up right now.

I see Matt took it upon himself to make a post about our first day, while I, none the less was sleeping. From my perspective, he’s pretty accurate about our travels, but forgot to include a few important aspects of the trip.

1. Who chooses to live in Amarillo? Really? I feel like there was no civilization there, I was so desperate to find an Oncue or 7-11 (the one’s that are clean, big, have nice bathrooms, and .49 cent 32 oz. drinks), but none the less there weren’t any.

2. Matt was correct, I had different expectations for Cadillac Ranch. I was hoping to see these beautiful 50’s model Cadillac’s buried half way in the ground in a sort of Stonehenge fashion. I clearly was wrong in what I had envisioned for this place. But it was fun, I wish I would have know spray paint was involved, we would have brought some and been artistic.

3. We had a late dinner, oh 9:30 or so, at a Rooftop Cantina. It was super fun. I think this is the first time all summer we have been able to have dinner outside.

Matt and I decided that we would not have any meal at a chain restaurant (In and Out Burger is not included in this because it is foreign to us) throughout this entire trip. So, me being the planner I start looking at where we are going to have lunch once we got to Amarillo about 2:45 pm. I had decided that Youngblood’s Stockyard Cafe looked like a good option. It had been reviewed by the locals, Food Network, and even had a write up about it in the New York Times. As my DHS work friends will understand, the restaurant was placed in the heart of what would be the equivalent of SW OKC/Capital Hill. Lots of “culture” for sure. Once we get there the damn restaurant was closed because apparently in Amarillo people eat from 6-2, take a freaking siesta, and decide to have dinner at by 5 pm. That obviously didn’t work out for us. We ended up at the Blue Sky Burger, which for what it was it was good.

As we drove up Interstate 25 to get to Sante Fe, the views were just amazing. We stopped on the side of the road to take pictures of the beautiful mountains/mesas. Once again, that feeling of no civilization came back as you could hear the crickets chirping and nothing else. The weather was beautiful, the photo’s fantastic and for once I was surrounded by beauty on all four sides and it was peaceful.

So, to the big question I am sure everyone is wondering, “have you the two of you killed each other yet?” Surprisingly no, not even one fight or complaint from either, but then again we are only on a day 2 of this adventure.

Off to play in Sante Fe! Happy Sunday!
